Doniphan County Barn Tour - October 9
The Doniphan County Historical Society will host a tour that includes National Register listed Byre and Bluff barns. This NE Kansas county contains more National Register barns than any other in the state. One of these barns was the site of a 5-day barn repair workshop in June. Those repairs have now been completed. Photos of the repairs in progress will be on display. Timberframe barn expert, Darrel Zimmerman, will be your guide for the day. His knowledge of these repairs is unique as he was a participant in the workshop. Another barn, c. late 1850s, on tour is likely the oldest barn in the area. The tour booklet will provide pictures and a brief history of each barn as well as a glossary of timberframe terms with explanatory drawings.
The site for lunch will be the Baker-Tennent House on the Courthouse Square Historical District. This house was built in 1856 and has hand-hewn floor joists and a post and beam, wooden pegged frame. Abraham Lincoln visited this home on Dec. 1, 1859 to see Sidney Tennent, an attorney. The house and nearby museum will be available for viewing. Lunch will be by Home Place Restaurant. The tour is a benefit for the Historical Society and this museum.
This tour is limited to 40 attendees. The fee is $25 which covers transportation and lunch. Reservations should be made before October 2 by mailing a check made out to the Doniphan County Historical Society to P.O. Box 357, Troy, KS 66087. You may park on the north side of the square. The tour will leave at 9 a.m. No private vehicles will be permitted. If you have questions, you may contact Pat Dill, pdill7@embarqmail.com, home phone 785-985-3721 or cell phone, 816-387-6016.
